WHY BE CORAL?
Since 1950, we have lost around 50% of the world’s corals. Species are disappearing right in front of us due to climate change, overfishing, pollution, and exploitation by tourism. Be Coral belongs to an environmental education branch of the Be Diving dive center that works with the local community committed to conservation, environmental awareness, teaching coral ecology, and practicing good diving habits.
DISCOVERING THE CORALS
OF THE MESOAMERICAN REEF
Every year, over 16 million people arrive from all over the world to experience scuba diving in the second largest barrier reef in the world, in order to see the incredible coral species and formations that the Mesoamerican Reef offers.
Tourism is crucial for the local economy and a great way to promote conservation. However, it also brings problems to the reefs such as overcrowding of divers in the area; many of whom are irresponsible divers that break corals, increasing the chemical load that contaminates this delicate ecosystem.
Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the world’s surface, yet they are responsible for supporting over 25% of marine life and its biodiversity. Coral reefs in the Mesoamerican Reef generate $4.5 trillion, of which $4 trillion is thanks to ECOTOURISM.
These incredible animals are crucial not only for the ocean but also for our own survival! They act as natural barriers protecting our coasts, produce oxygen, and support our fishing activities.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION,
NOT THE PROBLEM
Be Diving presents “Coral Discovery,” an experience that aims to promote responsibility and knowledge among divers.
Divers will learn about the biodiversity of coral ecosystems, identify representative groups, the difference between healthy and diseased corals, and how to distinguish them from other groups of invertebrates, such as hydrocorals and sponges. At the same time, divers will become aware of the problem of degradation facing these wonderful animals.
